CAPITALISM TOLD US TO EVEN MONETISE OUR PASSIONS

Somewhere along the way we stopped doing things just because they felt good. Like for many people drawing is no longer just drawing or maybe writing is not simply writing. Cooking stopped being a quiet hobby in the kitchen. What started as an expression of identity claiming or expressing oneself, suddenly  needed an audience, a strategy, a niche.

Capitalism sold us a shiny idea that sounded empowering at first. "Turn your passion into your profession." Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. It felt like freedom,  like the dream life everyone deserved.

But the fine print quietly changed the meaning of passion. Now when someone loves photography then the first question becomes how many followers they have. Someone enjoys baking and immediately people say you should start a page. Maybe sell something or just step into the race building a brand that is just so hyped everywhere . A hobby does not exist peacefully anymore. It has to perform, has to grow, has to monetise.

Passion slowly becomes pressure. You open social media and see people the same age turning every interest into income. The artist is now a content creator. The traveler is a digital storyteller. The reader is a book influencer. Everything becomes content and a piece that is just marketable.

And without noticing it you start measuring your joy like a business report. If your painting is not selling, maybe you are wasting time. If your writing is not reaching thousands maybe you should optimise it. The main thought process revolves around that if a hobby is not generating income maybe it is not productive enough.

So even when you are progressing you still feel behind. Because the system does not reward quiet growth but celebrates visible success. 'Numbers, followers, revenue, viral moments.' The timeline of success suddenly feels loud and competitive.

Meanwhile real progress looks very different. It is someone learning a skill slowly. Someone enjoying music after a long day, writing poems that only five people read but still feeling proud of them.

Those things are progress too. Just not the type that trends online. The truth is passion was never meant to be a performance and not every love needs to become a livelihood. Some interests deserve to stay soft and personal.

You are not behind if your hobbies are still hobbies and not wasting time if something simply makes your day lighter.

Sometimes the most rebellious thing in a productivity obsessed world is doing something you love without turning it into a brand.
